The problem with Microsoft's Surface and Surface 2 was that they ran Windows RT, a hobbled version of Microsoft's operating system that severely limited its capabilities. Sure, you could spring for the Surface Pro, but that slate came with a hefty price tag. Now Microsoft has unveiled the Surface 3, and it comes with full Windows and is much more reasonably priced. Where do we sign?
It runs Windows 8.1, but expect that to be upgradeable to Windows 10 when it launches in the summer.
In terms of hardware, not much has changed since the Surface 2. It's slightly slimmer and lighter, and it has a slightly different logo. But that's no bad thing – the Surface 2 would have been a fine device, was it not for the OS.
The screen is also slightly bigger, at 10.8 inches compared to the Surface 2's 10.6. It has the same 3:2 aspect ratio as the Surface Pro 3, giving it a resolution of 1,920x1,280 pixels. It also has pressure-sensitive pen input, so you can doodle away to your heart's content.
The kickstand only has three positions, so it's less adjustable than that on its predecessor. The rear camera is now 8 megapixels instead of 5. It charges using a standard microUSB cable too, instead of a proprietary one like its predecessor.
It will go on sale on May 5, starting at £420. Looks like the iPad Air 2 just got a new rival.
